Editorial: License plate readers can play an important role, but must be used responsibly
To the Editor:
I appreciated Senator Brian Adams’ recent column in the Post and Courier on automatic license plate readers and the need for South Carolina to handle this issue responsibly. Too often, debates over public safety tools become all-or-nothing arguments. In reality, the better answer is to set clear rules that protect privacy while still giving law enforcement the tools they need to do their jobs.
Automatic license plate readers can play an important role in solving serious crimes. They can help identify stolen cars, locate vehicles connected to violent crimes and assist in cases involving missing or endangered individuals. Those are real public safety benefits that should not be dismissed.
At the same time, South Carolinians should expect transparency, limits and accountability. This technology should be used for legitimate law enforcement purposes, not as a blank check for government overreach.
Senator Adams’ legislation recognizes both sides of the issue. It supports public safety while putting structure around how the technology is used. That is the kind of practical, commonsense policymaking South Carolina needs.
