Driver makes wrong turn and collides with train in Irmo, closing down the Saint Andrews Road railroad crossing temporarily

Shortly after 8 a.m., Thursday, a disoriented driver attempting to turn from Saint Andrews Road onto Leisure Lane missed and instead turned onto the railroad tracks as a train was coming.

The train struck the car and pushed it a quarter of a mile down the track, according to an Irmo Fire District report. There were no injuries to the driver or the train crew.

Emergency crews on the scene reported that it would take a while to clear the railroad tracks and the Saint Andrews Road railroad crossing would be closed. Track crossings were detoured to Seawright.

Irmo Fire District crews along with a tow company and the train operator were working to clear the tracks.
The estimated time of moving the train and re-opening the crossings is 11:30. Irmo Fire District Photos
