Driver cleared in runner’s death

LPDThe Lexington Police Department continues to investigate a vehicle and pedestrian collision that resulted in a fatality that occurred Wednesday morning on North Lake Drive near Sunset Blvd. in Lexington.

On Wednesday, at approximately 5:44 a.m., officers with the Lexington Police Department responded to a collision with injuries that occurred near the 800 block of North Lake Drive in Lexington. Upon arrival to the collision scene, officers found that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian.

During the course of the investigation, officers found the driver of the vehicle, Rebecca Laird of West Columbia, was traveling eastbound on North Lake Drive toward Sunset Blvd, with a green traffic signal light, when a pedestrian, John Flanagan of Lexington, ran across the road and was struck by her vehicle while he was in the road.

Officers spoke with independent witnesses at the collision scene along with viewing nearby video, which confirmed the driver of the vehicle did not contribute to the collision.

John Flanagan was transported to Palmetto Health Richland and later died from injuries sustained during the collision.
