City of West Columbia Developing Safe Streets and Roads Safety Plan with Federal Grant Funding – See The Details Regarding the Public Input Meeting and Survey Information
The City of West Columbia is developing a Safe Street and Roads Safety Action Plan (SAP). This effort is part of the City’s commitment to the Safe System Approach, a national strategy designed to eliminate transportation-related deaths and serious injuries.
This initiative stems directly from goals and priorities identified by the West Columbia City Council, which emphasized safety as a critical focus for the community’s future. The City was awarded a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant, providing essential funding for the plan.
The SAP will identify the most significant roadway safety concerns in the region and outline strategies to address serious-injury and fatal crashes affecting all roadway users. The plan places particular emphasis on improving walkability, accessibility, and safe transportation options for pedestrians and cyclists, key priorities for a growing city that has riverfront recreation, parks, and trail systems.
“West Columbia is thriving, and it is our responsibility to ensure that everyone can move through our city safely, whether walking, biking, or driving,” said Mayor Tem Miles. “This Safety Action Plan reflects the Council’s proactive commitment to protecting our residents and visitors. By investing in safer streets now, we are building a stronger, healthier, and more connected West Columbia for years to come.”
West Columbia is always looking for ways to expand and attract new recreational and economic opportunities, to continue improving accessibility and pedestrian safety, and to reduce traffic collisions. The SAP aims to address these concerns through measurable objectives, including:
- Enhancing sidewalk infrastructure and street lighting to increase walkability
- Implementing safety measures like improved signage, dedicated bike lanes, and speed-reduction initiatives
- Developing educational campaigns that promote safe pedestrian, cyclist, and driver behavior
The Safety Action Plan also positions the City to pursue future federal funding opportunities for implementing the recommended improvements. Community involvement will play a central role in shaping the plan, and the City invites residents, business owners, and stakeholders to participate in upcoming public meetings and an online survey to share feedback and help guide the future of transportation safety in West Columbia.
