Cayce offers smoke detector batteries, reminder of time change

Change Your Clock on Nov. 1 and Change Your Smoke Detector Battery t his week.

Cayce Public Safety.
Cayce Public Safety.

The City of Cayce Fire Department and Energizer are teaming up to promote fire safety awareness and to encourage the public to change the batteries in their smoke detectors when they change their clocks for daylight saving time.

The partnership is part of Energizer’s annual Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® program.

The City of Cayce Fire Department will be providing a limited number of batteries to the citizens of Cayce during the week of this week. Please call the Cayce Department of Public Safety at (803) 794-0456 to schedule for a firefighter to install new batteries in your smoke detectors.

Home fires take the lives of more than 2,500 people each year in the United States alone.* On average, seven people are killed in home fires every day.*

Energizer® and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) will partner for the 28th year to help lower this toll, inform Cayce area residents about fire safety and encourage people to adopt life-saving habits through the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® program.

Although there’s been an increase of homes with smoke detectors, the issue now is keeping the devices working. According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of five fatal fire injuries take place in homes without working smoke alarms. And 71 percent of smoke alarms that failed to operate had missing, disconnected or dead batteries.

Also, Cayce encourages all of our residents with gas appliances to install a carbon monoxide detector within their homes or apartments. Just like smoke, carbon monoxide is an invisible deadly gas.
