
Cayce Fire Department, other responders, managing active hazardous materials situation in Cayce
The City of Cayce Fire Department and other responding agencies are currently managing an active hazardous materials situation at Crystal Clean, located at 627 Poplar Street in Cayce.
- Incident: Potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide were accidentally mixed with cooking oil, causing chemical off-gassing and a tanker to become warm to the touch.
- Evacuations: Several homes in the immediate area have, or are being evacuated at this time. All residents within a ¼-mile radius are directed to evacuate as a precaution. Our City of Cayce police and fire will assist and direct with the evacuations.
- Responding Teams: City of Columbia and Lexington County Hazardous Materials Teams are working with Cayce on the scene.
- Public Safety: Please avoid the areas of Poplar Street until further notice. Please heed all barriers and law enforcement directives.
