Cayce Elementary students will move temporarily to remote learning
Dawn Kujawa – Lexington Two Communications – Students at Cayce Elementary will move temporarily from in-person classes to remote learning for two weeks, beginning Friday, August 27.
The decision to move to temporary remote instruction is a result of the impacts of COVID-19 on students, staff and school operations at the Lexington Two school. This decision is not tied only to the number of students and staff who are positive, but the number of students and staff who are also quarantined as the district continues to adhere to quarantine procedures.
The remote learning period will begin Friday, August 27. Students are tentatively scheduled to resume in-person classes on the campus on Thursday, September 9.
There will be no athletics, clubs, activities and/or events during the remote learning period. These activities will resume when students return to campus for in-person classes.
“Temporary remote instruction for Cayce Elementary — or any Lexington Two school — is not something we want, but our tools are limited when it comes to containing this highly contagious Delta variant,” said Lexington Two Superintendent Dr. Nicolas Wade. “We already had a number of Cayce classes in quarantine. As of Thursday afternoon, roughly 16 percent of our students were positive or in quarantine, nearly 17 percent of staff were out for illness and quarantine, and we are still inputting the data and contact tracing. We fully expect the numbers to grow for students and staff. Securing substitutes has been challenging. We follow 14-day quarantine guidance for our students on COVID. We let Cayce parents know through phone calls, emails, Class DoJo and social media about this temporary move, and we look forward to bringing our Cayce students back on campus on September 9.”
Free student meals will be available for drive-thru pickup in the traffic loop in front of Riverbank Elementary from 11am-12pm on Monday, August 30, and Thursday, September 2. Several days of weekday meals will be distributed over each of those two days. For additional questions about meals, contact food services at (803) 739-8381.
