Carolina Water Service fined $78,940
Carolina Water Service has been fined $78,940 for dumping sewage into the Lower Saluda River.
Carolina Water Service does business in Lexington County.
The amount of the fine was revealed Monday in an agenda for a board meeting of the the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. The fine will have to be approved by a DHEC board.
In June, CWS discharged sewage into the Saluda River at Saluda Shoals near Irmo.
Palmetto Outdoor Center is a recreational tubing business that picks up its floaters at Riverwalk- at the Gervais Street Bridge in West Columbia. It had to close for three days last summer, after bacteria levels in the river got too high because of CWS serage dumps.
In addition to the fine, CWS will be monitored closely and it is required to change its procedures for discharging into the river.
