Carolina Water Service fined $1.5 million by judge
Carolina Water Service, which operates in Lexington County, was fined $1.5 million Thursday by a federal judge.
The Congaree Riverkeeper sued CWS for allowing sewage to flow into the Saluda River from the CWS treatment plant at I-20.
Bill Spangler of the Congaree Riverkeeper said CWS was violating the Clean Water Act.
After the judge’s order, Spangler said he was pleased with the ruling from the court.
“It sends a strong message to any polluter,” Spangler said.
Spangler also the ruling was a victory for the rivers of the Midlands and he looks forward to the order being enforced.
