Brookland-Cayce wins State High School Soccer Championship, Membreño scores 3 goals
By Jackson Ward and Terry Ward – Brookland-Cayce defeated Daniel by a score of 4-2 in Boys soccer Saturday to win the 3A SC High School League State Championship. The title game was played at Irmo High School.
“All playoffs long they’ve just shown resiliency and just kept pushing,” said BC Head Coach Matt Drapeau. He also said he knew Daniel would not quit, but “it’s not about how you start the game, it’s about how we end it.”
Brookland-Cayce’s Eduardo Moisa Membreño was the offensive star of the game. He scored the first goal, 5 minutes into the first half to put the Bearcats up 1-0. Membreño scored again with 25 minutes left in the first half to put BC up 2-0. He had 3 goals for the match.
With just under 12 minutes left in the first half, BC’s Lawton Powers scored and the Bearcats took a 3-0 lead. Daniel got on the scoreboard after a penalty kick with a score by Luis Lezama with a little more than 5 minutes left in the half. It was 3-1 Brookland-Cayce at that point. The Bearcats were still up 3-1 at halftime.
Daniel’s Eddie Merck scored four minutes into the second half to close the gap to 3-2, BC still leading.
The rest of the second half remained a defensive struggle with neither team scoring until Membreño broke the stalemate. He scored with two minutes left to put the Bearcats up 4-2.
Drapeau is in his fourth year as BC’s head coach. This year’s State Championship Final was Brookland-Cayce’s first for the boys team since 2014. The Bearcats finish the season with a 20-6 record.
Four of BC’s losses in 2021 were to 5A soccer powers. The other two losses were to 4A schools.
Daniel defeated Berea 3-1, Tuesday, to win the Upper State Final.
