Brookland-Cayce swimmers set 5 school records at 3A State Championship
Brookland-Cayce High School swimmers set five new school records at the recent 3A State Championships at the North Charleston Aquatic Center.
Highlights from the Brookland-Cayce’s girls meet, held Saturday (Oct. 10) include a fifth-place finish and a new school record by Kenlee Ann Cassella in the 500m Freestyle, and an 11th place finish by Jaidyn Malpass in the 50m Freestyle. The 200m Freestyle Relay of Kenlee Ann Cassella, Jaidyn Malpass, Kaitlin Robinson, and Hope Donadio finished fifth and set a new school record. The girls were also helped to an eighth finish overall — the highest in school history — by the Medley Relay of Rachel O’Dell, Hope Donadio, Kenlee Ann Cassella, and Jaidyn Malpass.
The boys followed up with their competition Monday. Ronin Pettit led the Bearcats with a silver medal in the 50m Freestyle, and a fourth-place finish and new school record in the 100m Breaststroke. The 400m Freestyle Relay of Ronin Pettit, Landon Hix, Drew Hix, and Matt Edwards also got a top-10 finish and broke a 17-year-old school record.
The Brookland-Cayce girls’ state team included seniors Rachel O’Dell and Hope Donadio, junior
Jaidyn Malpass, freshmen Kenlee Ann Cassella and Kaitlin Robinson, and eighth-grader Ivey Harrell. The boys’ state team included senior Ronin Pettit, Landon Hix, Drew Hix, Matt Edwards and Xan Smythe.
“The BC varsity swim team faced quite a bit of adversity this year, but they faced it admirably,” said Coach Christian Mowles. “We had our pre-season shortened due to the ongoing pandemic, but with the leadership shown by some of our seniors, we were still able to bring over 50 percent of our team to the State Championship meet this year. The amount of fight and dedication given to this team by this group of swimmers is evident by the results. Even with the odds stacked against them, the swimmers were really able to show up and swim hard.”
“I’m incredibly proud of this team for all they did this year,” Mowles added, “and it illustrates to me the special group of kids we had on the team this year.”
