A 16-year-old student at Brookland-Cayce High School in Cayce was taken into custody Tuesday at 1:15, after a handgun was found in his backpack, according to the Cayce Department of Public Safety.

The student was taken into custody immediately and transported to the SC Department of Juvenile Justice.  The student’s name will not be released based on his age.

The weapon was found in the student’s backpack during an investigation into stolen property at the school.  After locating the weapon, school administrators immediately notified the School Resource Officer and turned over the weapon.  At this time it appears that the student brought the weapon to school accidentally and no threats were made against any students or faculty.  The student was cooperative with school administrators as well as the School Resource Officer during the incident.
