Brookland-Cayce graduate and athlete killed while serving in the Navy in California

Brookland-Cayce High School graduate Donte Brown was killed Saturday in La Mesa, CA.

He was shot in the chest and neck after he opened the door of his apartment according to the La Mesa Police Department. Brown was 22. He played football and basketball at Brookland-Cayce. He graduated from BC in 2017 and he was serving in the US Navy when he was shot. Brown went to Northside Middle School, too.

“We are devastated by this news,” said Brookland-Cayce Basketball Coach Robert Wells.” Donte was a valuable member of our team and a great person. We were very proud of him.” 

“This is a tremendous loss to the BC community,” said BC Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Rusty Charpia. “Our hearts are with his family.” 

Others who knew Brown expressed sadness too.

“He was a great player and played with a BC team that went to the Lower State Final,” said Liz Castles, who is a member of the Lexington Two School Board. She also has children who were classmates of Brown’s.

“He worked at Food Lion in West Columbia,” Castles said. “I would ask what his plans were after graduation and he said ‘Navy.’ That’s exactly what he did.” Castles also said Brown was always friendly to her sons, especially the younger ones, Sullivan and Lucas. She said his death is “heartbreaking.”

The shooting was reported on San Diego TV news station FOX 5.

The news report said: “The shooting happened at about 12:26 a.m. Saturday at an apartment in the 4300 block of Echo Court, according to Lt. Greg Runge of the La Mesa Police.” Department.

Brown was transported to the hospital and he died during surgery, according to the news report.
No description of the suspects or a motive for the shooting was immediately available.
