Brookland-Cayce High School graduate Donte Brown was killed Saturday in La Mesa, CA.
He was shot in the chest and neck after he opened the door of his apartment according to the La Mesa Police Department. Brown was 22. He played football and basketball at Brookland-Cayce. “This is a tremendous loss to the BC community,” said BC Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Rusty Charpia. “Our hearts are with his family.”
Others who knew Brown expressed sadness too.
“He was a great player and played with a BC team that went to the Lower State Final,” said Liz Castles, who is a member of the Lexington Two School Board. She also has children who were classmates of Brown’s.
“He worked at Food Lion in West Columbia,” Castles said. “I would ask what his plans were after graduation and he said ‘Navy.’ That’s exactly what he did.” Castles also said Brown was always friendly to her sons, especially the younger ones, Sullivan and Lucas. She said his death is “heartbreaking.”
