Brookland-Cayce falls short in Lower State Championship game
For almost all of three quarters it looked like Brookland-Cayce was headed to the State Championship Game. But a Touchdown by Dillon with 11:51 left in the fourth quarter put the Wildcats up to stay.
Dillon defeated BC 34-21 in the 3A Lower State Championship game Friday night.
The game started with a fumble by BC Quarterback Reed Charpia. Dillon took the ball in from five yards out to lead 7-0 with less than a minute gone in the game. But Charpia then hit Sammy Lykes on a fourth-and-2 for a 50-plus-yard TD pass, to tie it at 7.
Cam Brown then returned a Dillon fumble – caused by Tay Pringle, for a touchdown and BC was up 14-7 with 7:34 left in the first quarter. The Bearcats recovered an onside kick to lead 21-7. But just before the half, Dillon scored a touchdown to make it 21-14 at the half.
With 3:40 left in the third, Dillon scored on a 60-yard-run to tie it at 21. The go-ahead score for the Wildcats came early in the fourth, and Dillon scored its final TD with 1:00 left in the game.
Dillon improves to 13-1 with the win and BC’s season ends at 12-2. The Wildcats will face Chapman, a winner over Newberry Friday night, next week in the State Championship game at Williams-Brice Stadium.
