The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has identified Gonzalo Briseno, 35, of Columbia as the person who went underwater in Lake Murray on Saturday afternoon.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources responded to the lake near the Newberry-Lexington County line after receiving a report that several people on a boat went into the water to help a person who was in distress.

The person in distress did not come back to the surface.

Newberry County Water Rescue and Fire Rescue responded and assisted SCDNR. The body was recovered around 4:20 p.m. Sunday. An autopsy was scheduled and the incident was under investigation.
