Miriam Theda Stutler, a sophomore at Brookland-Cayce High School, has been awarded the Rotary Youth Exchange Scholarship.

Miriam is scheduled to leave in August, and spend the next school year in Switzerland, living with three different host families. She will live in a small village outside of Zurich, and attend the local high school there.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the student to grow, learn, and gain invaluable leadership skills,” said Dr. Vicki Tatum, the Charleston-based co-chair of Rotary’s District 7770. Tatum is also the Rotary Exchange Student Coordinator. Miriam is sponsored locally by the Lexington Rotary Club.

The scholarship covers room, board, tuition, and a monthly stipend for overseas high school studies.

As a part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, Miriam will be meeting a lot of other students from all over the world.

Even though it will mean a year away from home, Miriam said she is excited about the opportunity for international travel.

“It will provide me with a global perspective and allow me to serve as a student ambassador for South Carolina and the United States,” Miriam said.

Lynda Shafer is Miriam’s mother. She said she appreciative for the chance.

“I’m excited for Miriam, for all that she’ll learn about other cultures and about herself. And I’m grateful for the dedicated folks in Rotary who are giving her this life-enriching opportunity.” said Shafer.

Before she goes, Miriam will attend multiple weekend retreats to meet other exchange students. The year after she gets back from Switzerland, Miriam will share her experiences to help other students prepare for their entry into the program.

Miriam will also be required to write four essays summarizing her journey. She will be expected to make oral presentations to her sponsoring Rotary Club and to the host Rotary Club in the host country’s language.
