Autopsy scheduled for man, 45, who died in Irmo apartment fire, says Lexington County Coroner

One person died in an Irmo apartment fire, Saturday, and an Irmo Police Officer was injured.

At 7:20 p.m., the Irmo Police Department responded to a structure fire at the Irmo Village Apartment Complex on Chipwood Court. An Officer was on the scene within minutes and quickly located the apartment that was on fire. The officer entered the apartment, found a person inside and sustained injuries while removing the person from the apartment. The Irmo Fire Department responded and was able to contain the fire to one unit and extinguish the blaze.

The person found in the apartment did not survive. The officer was transported to Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge Hospital and was treated for injuries and released.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the individual who died in the apartment fire as Mr. James Ray Wright II, 45, of Irmo. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday, at 11 a.m. at MUSC in Charleston.

The Irmo Police Department along with the Irmo Fire Department and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire and death.
