Airport eliminates Brookland-Cayce, advances in baseball playoffs

Airport eliminated Brookland-Cayce, Monday, and advanced in the 4A S.C. High School League baseball playoffs. Airport has won the last two District VII titles.
With the victory, the Eagles improve to 10-9-1. BC fell to 12-13. Brandon Caughman was the winning pitcher. Adam Krissinger was charged with the loss.

“I’m proud of the way our guys have overcome regular season adversity,” said Airport head coach Tim Perry, after the game versus BC. He also said, moving forward, his ultimate goal is “to win the last game his team plays.” Perry said his team is playing good defense and hitting the ball well, too.
Airport was undefeated throughout the double-elimination tournament.  Brookland-Cayce, which defeated Beaufort twice, lost to the Eagles last Thursday.  In order to win the District 7 Championship, the Bearcats would have had to win two consecutive games against the Airport. But that was not to be.

Airport jumped out to an early lead in the third inning thanks to RBI’s from Cam Beckham and Sam LaFrage.  Parker Whittle also had an RBI.  The Eagles were assisted by some Bearcat errors. And the Bearcats missed an opportunity in the top of the third inning by leaving the bases loaded.
But the Bearcats did get on the scoreboard, thanks to an Aubrey Richardson’s double to lead off the fourth. Then Richardson stole home on a wild pitch.  BC got another run in the inning to bring the score to 3-2 in the top of the fourth.

There was another opportunity in the sixth, when Trey Marshall hit a leadoff single. But Airport stopped a Bearcat rally with a double play when a runner got thrown out on a failed, pop-up bunt attempt. In the top of the seventh, the Bearcats had a runner in scoring position but that threat was ended with a two-out groundout.
