Kinetic Derby Day a success, anticipation building for next year – Photo gallery
Kinetic Derby Day planners have had a few days to assess the impact of the second year of the event. And the impressions are all positive.
“We think we had about 1,500 in attendance which is triple from last year,” said Anna Huffman, West Columbia’s communications director. And they came from all over. “We had entries from Aynor, Conway, Branchville, North Augusta, Charleston, Philadelphia, Goose Creek, Lexington, Columbia, and West Columbia.” Video here:https://www.facebook.com/WestColaSC/videos/450040982432712/
West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton said it was heartwarming to see so many people having so much fun.
“Kinetic Derby Day was exactly what we envisioned it to be,” said Horton. “We wanted to show the best of our city and our people. I thank the staff of the City of West Columbia, all the volunteers and everyone who came. You make Kinetic Derby Day special. It is an event that has quickly become a signature for us. I’m so proud of the effort by all. I am extremely pleased to be a part of it.” More video: https://www.facebook.com/WestColaSC/videos/2376278199327514/
West Columbia City Councilman Jimmy Brooks said he was thrilled with the turn out. He attended Kinetic Derby Day with his wife Jennifer and daughter Gracie and son, Alston.
“It was great,” said Brooks. “The city’s staff did a great job with it. It was managed extremely well. And the weather was perfect. You could not have asked for a better day.”
Brooks said he believes Kinetic Derby Day will just get better. He said he sees it as a defining, must-see event for the area.
Brooks also said he talked to some friends who were motivated to participate because they saw so many competitors having so much fun this year.
“They were very interested in the soapbox cars, and I think there will be even more competitors next year. They want to get involved with a car,” Books said. More video: https://www.facebook.com/WestColaSC/videos/366415667415157/
With another Kinetic Derby Day completed, it’s obvious that it is becoming an opportunity to show the best of what West Columbia has to offer.
