West Columbia woman, Columbia man killed in crash on I-26 in Cayce
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a collision that killed two people Monday morning on I-26 close to I-77.
According to the S.C. Highway Patrol, a driver was traveling in the wrong direction and collided with a second vehicle on I-26 E at the 116 mile-marker in Lexington County.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the individuals who in the collision that occurred at approximately 7:20 a.m., where I-26 eastbound and I-77 northbound converge.
According to Fisher, Mr. John L. McCravy, 79, of Columbia was traveling in the wrong direction on I-77 when he collided head-on with another vehicle. McCravy was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The driver of the other vehicle, Ms. Ann-Marie S. Vargas-Kincade, 42, of West Columbia was pronounced dead at the scene. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
The Cayce Department of Public Safety also worked the crash, with the SCHP.
The interstate was closed – and traffic was rerouted- while the incident was investigated, and cleared.
