Coroner identifies 2 who died after pursuit in Lexington County
Report from Lexington County Sheriff’s Department – Adam Myrick
A pursuit in southern Lexington County ended in a fatal crash Monday morning at the entrance to the South Carolina State Farmers Market.
A Lexington County deputy attempted to stop a car in the 600 block of Meadowfield Drive after noting it matched the description of a car reported stolen to the South Congaree Police Department Monday morning. The driver of the stolen car initiated the pursuit when he failed to stop for the deputy’s blue lights and siren.
The pursuit traveled on Meadowfield Road, Woodtrail Drive and Highway 321. The pursuit ended, before noon, in the 3400 block of Charleston Highway at the South Carolina State Farmers Market when the stolen car collided with a commercial delivery vehicle.
The driver of the stolen car and a passenger died in the collision. The commercial delivery vehicle’s driver was injured, but is expected to recover.
The stolen car’s driver had a suspended driver’s license and was wanted by the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services.
South Carolina state troopers are investigating the collision, which is standard procedure in crashes that occur during a police pursuit.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the two who died in the collision as Mr. Timothy Roberts, 44, of Swansea, and Ms. Nicole Beran, 39, of Lexington.
Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene due to his injuries, and Beran was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Neither were wearing a seatbelt when the collision occurred, according to the coroner. The driver of the commercial delivery vehicle was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
