Crash closes I-26, HAZMAT team called in

Eastbound lanes were closed on Interstate 26 after a crash of two tractor trailers, and other vehicles, Thursday evening.

Motorists were being asked to find an alternate route. The incident was causing major traffic delays, and it was expected to take several hours to clear, possibly impacting early-morning traffic.

Columbia Fire Department and Irmo Fire District crews were on scene, along with Columbia HAZMAT teams, according to the Columbia Fire Department. According to the Irmo Fire Department, one of the tractor trailers was leaking hazard waste. However it poses no threat to the community.

The collision occurred on I-26 east at mile marker 106 near St. Andrews Road, and closed the east side of I-26 from the scene of the crash to Piney Grove Road.

The driver of one tractor trailer was entrapped. Six people were transported to local hospitals for non life-threatening injuries.
Chief Michael Sonefeld of the Irmo Fire Department says they are “moving as swiftly as they can,” and they hope to have traffic moving in time for Friday morning rush hour.  Irmo Fire District photos.
