The West Columbia Beautification Foundation held its fourth annual Tribute for Trees Tuesday. More than 100 people came out for the event that is a fundraiser for the foundation.

During the tribute, WCBF Chairwoman Melissa Sprouse-Browne presented West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton with a plaque dedicating a tree in honor of Kay Horton, Horton’s wife who passed away in August.

The plaque reads: Karen “Kay” Hunter Horton was the beloved wife of Mayor Bobby Horton. She will always be remembered for her extraordinary kindness and will be in our hearts forever. West West Columbia Beautification Foundation.  The WCBF is planting a tree in the planned Carraway/Enabling park adorned with the plaque, in her memory.

Funds raised from the Tribute for Trees go toward planting greenery at various points in West Columbia. Hundreds of magnolia trees have been placed along Sunset Boulevard with money collected by the WCBF. Many other indigenous plants have been added, too.

Other areas of the city that have received attention from the WCBF are Triangle City and the US 1 corridor. The Tribute to trees was held in the New Brookland Room of the West Columbia City Hall.
