South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has announced that almost $33 million in unclaimed property was returned to its owners in 2017.
Loftis praised the work of the Unclaimed Property Program for helping to identify people who have unclaimed money throughout the state. According to a Treasurer’s Office press release, the annual amount of returned money has doubled under Loftis’ administration. A total of over $137 million has been returned since Loftis took office in 2011. Loftis said it is more money returned than all previous treasurers combined.

Unclaimed property includes dormant bank accounts, stock certificates, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and utility deposits. However, the Unclaimed Property Program does not hold tangible property such as land or vehicles.

Despite all the money returned, Loftis said there is still $550 million in unclaimed funds that belongs to someone. “Everyone should check their name to see if they have unclaimed property. You might not even know that you have money waiting for you,” said Loftis.
