Seven Brookland-Cayce High School athletes who were standouts in their respective sports will be inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame this weekend.

This year’s inductees made their names in football, baseball, basketball, cross country, track, swimming and cheerleading.  A reception is planned for 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20 in the lobby of the school gym. Induction will follow during half-time of the football game between Brookland-Cayce and Swansea at Bearcat Stadium.

Here’s a look at the seven who are being inducted:

Charles E. Bundrick (class of 1940) — Bundrick was an athlete in baseball, football, track and basketball. His leadership roles included basketball captain and track co-captain in 1938-39 and football captain in 1939-40. He was named Most Athletic Senior Male.

Evelyn Johnson Bundrick (class of 1940) — Bundrick participated in basketball, track and cheerleading. Among her leadership roles were basketball and track captain from 1936-40 and head cheerleader from 1938-40. She was named Most Athletic Senior Female.

Carl Vincent Carney (class of 1985) — Carney played football and was named to teams for All-Area High School Football by WIS-TV and The Columbia Record in 1983 and 1984; All-State High School Football by the Greenville News in 1984; and Shrine Bowl in 1984. He was an All-American High School honorable mention in 1984 and was named Most Athletic Male Athlete in 1985.  He also participated in baseball and weightlifting. He went on to play football at East Carolina University.

Mary Frances Newman — Newman coached girls’ varsity basketball in the 1950s, and her teams annually competed for city and district championships. Her 1952 team played for the state championship. Newman was a Lexington Two teacher, coach, and school and district administrator for more than 64 years. She was inducted into the school’s Education Hall of Fame and was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest civilian honor.

William Rogers (class of 1997) — Rogers, an athlete in swimming, cross country and track, was a state swim champion in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly. He went on to swim for Clemson University (all-time top 10 in 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly) and was an Olympic qualifier in the 50 free in 1999-2000. He also was named to All-Region Cross Country and All-State Swim (four years).

Olin Christus “Chris” Shull –– The football, baseball and basketball player earned Lineman of the Week Columbia Touchdown Club honors and was named to 1964 All-Area Football.

Monroe WIlburn Yonce — Yonce participated in football, baseball and track. He was named to the Columbia Area All-Star Team and was voted All-City Football Player.
