Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the victim of a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The incident took place in the 200 block of Seleta Circle, near Pond Branch Road in Lexington County.

Around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, a fugitive task force consisting of U.S. Marshals, deputies from Lexington and Richland counties and Columbia police officers attempted to serve a warrant in the 200 block of Seleta Circle, according to a Lexington County Sheriff’s report.

Shortly after officers arrived, they made contact with the man who was wanted on two charges of distributing methamphetamine.

After a short foot chase, the man began making threats toward officers. A Lexington County deputy fired his weapon, hitting the suspect. EMS responded.

According to Fisher, John Bittle, 39, of Lexington was pronounced dead at the scene as the result of a gunshot wound.   An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday.   SLED is investigating.
