Sandy Harley has filed to run for the vacancy on West Columbia City Council, District 1.

The seat became open upon the death of West Columbia City Councilman Dale Harley on March 23.

“I have lived in West Columbia my whole married life, so my roots go deep,” said Harley, who was married to Dale Harley for 55 years. “I care about the city, its people and its employees. I want to be a part of seeing the progress continue that the city has made in the last almost 24 years my husband, Dale, was on council. I would be honored if the people of West Columbia choose to elect me.”

Harley also said her relationship with Dale has given her some insight.

“Listen to what people have to say, study the issues, be informed on what you are voting on,” she said. “Being on Council is not about you. It is about the good of the city and its people. Dale believed this and I believe it also.”

The special election for the seat is June 20. Mike Green has also filed to run in District 1, said Mary Brack of the Lexington County Voter Registration Office. Filing closed on April 21. District 1 covers an area in the Platt Springs Road area of the city, near Springdale.

Harley said there are limits as only one of nine votes on council, but she will be accessible.
“I could list ideas and promise you things that I would not be able to do as one vote on council. But I will promise you that I will listen. And I am only a phone call, e-mail or personal visit away,” she said.
