Man released from hospital charged in officer-involved shooting
City of Cayce Spokeswoman Ashley Hunter issued a statement Tuesday afternoon regarding the Cayce Public Safety officer involved shooting. The statement is below.
On Sunday “at approximately 8:15 p.m. Officers responded to 141 Tufton Court located in the City of Cayce for a report of gunshots coming from the residence. Officers arrived on scene and attempted to contact the occupant of the residence by phone but were unsuccessful. Uniformed officers approached the residence and knocked on the front door, while identifying themselves as Police. A person, later identified as John William Day, opened the front door (with) a handgun in his hand. Mr. Day then pointed the weapon at officers, at which time, officers discharged their weapons striking Mr. Day in the lower abdomen. Officers disarmed Mr. Day and began medical care on him until the arrival of EMS. Mr. Day was then transported to a Columbia Area hospital to be treated for his injuries.”
The two officers from the City of Cayce are now on administrative leave with pay while the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division conducts their investigation at the request of the Director of the Cayce Department of Public Safety, Chief Byron Snellgrove. (On Tuesday) the defendant was released from the hospital and was served arrest warrants for Pointing and Presenting a Firearm and Discharging a Firearm within the City Limits of Cayce. The defendant has been transported to the Lexington County Detention Center for bond hearing.
