The shelf was empty.
“We’ve read all of our books and we need more” That was the message Chuck Underhill got from K-through-2 students at at Davis Childhood Center for Technology, in Cayce.
“We will help you get more,” Underhill told the students. He is the coordinator for FLOCK the community outreach of the House of Raeford poultry plant in West Columbia.
“We now have 500 new books,” said Dr. Cecil McClary, the principal at Davis. “Kids love new books.”
The books included the subjects of Peter the Cat, Ironman, Peppa the Pig, Legos, Mr. Panda and Skippy Jones. Superheroes seemed to be popular, too. Underhill said the donation included more than $2,000 worth of books.
Dionne Louden is the Reading Coach at Davis. “When they got the books, the students were very excited,” she said. More reading helps the students become better readers and it is a great way to learn, said Louden. She also said the books help keep reading skills on level for the students.
Underhill said Flock is glad to step in and help with the books. He told the students in the class of Tiffany Ross that FLOCK would help the next time the they run out of books, and need more.
McClary said the more books, the better.
“We’ll keep these books and build our library,” he said.
