West Columbia Riverwalk repair completion set for April, May
Work to repair most of West Columbia’s flood-damaged Riverwalk should begin in early December. Jamie Hook, the city’s public works director, said the plan is to select a contractor to do the work in November. Hook spoke at the West Columbia City Council meeting Tuesday.
The FEMA-funded process to fix Riverwalk has had to comply with permitting by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. That has slowed the repair schedule.
The job will include the Riverwalk path from the Moffatt Street entrance off of Sunset Boulevard to within 100 yards of Cayce. In that portion of repair work is the trellis below Bridgepoint Condominiums and the boardwalk under the Gervais Street Bridge. Both are now unusable. There is also a board bridge further down the trail – toward Cayce- in the repair plan.
Hook said 270 feet of concrete will have to be taken up and replaced. He also said the repair will require the closing of Riverwalk for some period of time, but he was not sure how long.
About 100 yards of Riverwalk, near Cayce, will need erosion mitigation. That portion of Riverwalk is scheduled for repair completion in May.
