The grounds of the historic Brickworks in Cayce were full of “Oompah” last weekend.
It was the first Oktoberfest celebration held at the open space at the base of the Blossom Street Bridge. Cayce Mayor Elise Partin helped kick off the festivities Saturday morning.

The event was organized by Scott Burgess, a local brewmaster and beer enthusiast. Burgess brews his beer at a Columbia brewery and he runs the Bierkeller Columbia Facebook page and a website.
The Brickworks party was held Saturday and Sunday. It was part of a plan by Burgess to present pop-up German-style beer gardens. His first effort was satisfying.

“We have been absolutely amazed and delighted by the wonderful response to our first Oktoberfest celebration,” Burgess said.
He also issued a “danke schön” (thank you in German) and said the numbers were great.
There were 450 gallons, or 30 kegs, of Kölsch and Kellerbier beer, brewed by Burgess, sold in the two days in Cayce. And approximately 2,000 people came out to the beer garden. There was German food on the site, too.

In addition to the flowing libations, the The Channellheimers Oompah Band kept the party rolling on Saturday. There were also many patrons participating in the Chicken Dance. The Chicken Dance is a drinking maneuver traditionally performed at Oktoberfest.

Burgess said he looks forward to more beer garden events and the release of new types of beer.
“We hope you had as much fun as we did,” Burgess said. “Thank you for supporting German beer garden culture.”
