There should be plenty of eggs in West Columbia, now.

A pilot program implemented in 2014, and allowed for one year of domestic chicken-keeping, has been made permanent.

West Columbia City Council voted to keep the ordinance in place at its June 7, meeting.

The initial ordinance was passed last year, but council vowed to come back for a vote a year later in order for it to remain in place.

The ordinance allows up to four chickens at a residence. No roosters are allowed. The chicken coops must also be built in the backyard. And they must stand at least 30 feet from all property lines.

Chicken-keepers must have a permit in order to have the chickens on their property. There are only two families that have permits for domestic chickens in West Columbia, according to Mayor Bobby Horton.

The ordinance to allow for chickens did not pass in 2013. Other municipalities near West Columbia- including Cayce, Springdale and Columbia allow residents to keep chickens.
