Lexington County recommends evacuation, issues curfew
Lexington County recommends evacuation, issues curfew
Lexington County emergency management officials recommend the voluntary evacuation of all locations within a quarter mile of the banks of the Lexington County side of the Saluda and Congaree rivers. This voluntary evacuation recommendation is based on information received from SCE&G concerning its plans to release more water from the Lake Murray Dam, which will impact the Saluda and Congaree rivers.
The public should seek shelter with friends or family outside of the quarter mile evacuation zone.
Lexington County will open White Knoll High School as an American Red Cross shelter later this afternoon. Pets are not permitted in American Red Cross shelters.
Lexington County curfew
A curfew has been issued for 6 p.m. tonight in all unincorporated areas of Lexington County and its municipalities except Chapin and Irmo. The curfew will be in effect until 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.
If you must travel for work or emergency purposes, please note many roads are impassable and visibility will be greatly diminished after dark. DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH STANDING WATER. Vehicles can be swept away in one foot of water.
Be aware of potential flash flooding from these rising waters. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move to higher ground. Do not wait to be told to move.
Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of moving water can make you fall. If you have to walk in water, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.
Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. You and the vehicle could be quickly swept away. One foot of water can cause your car to float off the roadway.
