Former Brookland-Cayce Football Coach Bettis Herlong will be inducted into the South Carolina Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December. Herlong died in 2003.

Herlong won 197 games from 1950-1980 at Saluda, Aiken, Johnston (Fla.), Strom Thurmond. He won a state title at Brookland-Cayce in 1966.

Keith Chapman, who coaches now at Newberry College, played for Herlong.

“He was a tough coach, one of the toughest ever, but he got results,” Chapman said.

Chapman said Herlong deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. “He was a great coach.”

After winning the state title at BC, Chapman got a full-scholarship for football to Newberry.

“Coach Herlong got me started in coaching,” Chapman said.

Chapman coached high school teams as an assistant or head coach at Newberry, Irmo, Lower Richland, Lexington and Gilbert. He was BC’s head coach from 1988 to 1991.

“Coach Herlong was a big influence in my life,” said Chapman. “He was an outstanding man and an outstanding
coach.”
