Savage Craft Ale Works, Hood Construction, and design company Studio 2LR, received the Historic Preservation Honor Award from the SC Department of Archives and History.

Savage Craft Ale Works at 425 Center St. in West Columbia is in the old Brookland City Hall building that also housed the fire station, and armory. The former jail is in the building next door to the brewery.

The two properties were transformed into a full kitchen, brew space, tap room, and multiple gathering spaces. The 12,800 sq.ft. former city hall had been empty for decades until Baumer Holdings, LLC. (Savage Craft’s parent company) transformed it two years ago.

As a part of the renovation, the building’s original wood flooring in spaces throughout the facility were preserved and much of the equipment around the building was repurposed and given new life. The overhead garage door was turned into furniture. The former jail was converted into a full commercial kitchen that serves hundreds.

The SC Department of Archives and History celebrates notable projects from around South Carolina. Award criteria include the project’s impact on the community, its degree of difficulty, and the degree to which the project serves as an example of outstanding commitment to historic preservation and exemplary preservation techniques.

“It is a lot of fun working on complex projects like this one. But it’s that much more rewarding to see it now – completely revitalized – and such a great place for people to gather in West Columbia,” said Hood Construction Project Manager, Amanda Harter. “We have really enjoyed working with Andrew and the team at Savage,” added Vice President of Construction Management, Dean Wilson, “It is a huge honor for us to be a part of this project.”
