Man who died in Cayce Police incident identified by coroner
William Bowie, 44, of Newberry has been identified by Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford as the person killed during a high speed chase, involving the Cayce Police Department. The pursuit began in Lexington County and ended in a crash near Shop Road in Columbia Monday afternoon.
Bowie was accused of entering the parking lot of a Cayce business and stole items from several vehicles, according to Ashley Hunter , city of Cayce Spokeswoman.
Bowie was also wanted on multiple warrants in multiple jurisdictions for larceny, burglary, breach of trust. He was seen driving on Charleston Highway in Cayce Monday afternoon.
Cayce officers attempted stop Bowie, but he fled. Bowie reached high rates of speed while being chased by Cayce officers. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the chase.
Just before 4 p.m., Bowie, traveling North on Pineview Road ran a red light at the corner of Pineview and Shop roads. He hit two vehicles injuring one driver who was transported to the hospital. The other driver suffered no injuries.
