Lexington County Coroner, Margaret Fisher, has identified the individual who died in a vehicle versus tree accident. the crash occurred at the intersection of Pine Plain Road and Huckabee Mill Road in Swansea shortly before 10 p.m. on July 2.

According to Fisher, Mr. Joel Van Smith, 22, of West Columbia was driving southbound on Pine Plain Road when he failed to navigate a curve, left the road. His vehicle hit a tree. The collision resulted in a vehicle fire. Mr. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. The South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the incident.
