Members of Brookland-Cayce High School Class of 1970 had their Class Reunion in October. At that meeting, the class vowed to attend a church service at Brookland Baptist Church, where their classmate, Dr. Charles Jackson is the senior pastor.

Sunday, more than 50 graduates from the BCHS Class of 1970 came to the Brookland Baptist service.

“I’ve waited 50 years for this hour,”Jackson said from the pulpit. “It’s been worth every year that we’ve awaited their coming to be with us. I’ve enjoyed already the brief moments we’ve spent in fellowship.”

Jackson has been pastor at Brookland Baptist for more than 50 years. Sharon Lee Jeffcoat, 1970 BC graduate, said Jackson’s classmates are proud of all he has become since high school.

“He means so much,” she said. “He is so important. He is a man of God and has brought so much unity to the community. He has given so much of himself. He is so generous and he is so unassuming.”

Susan Gunnells Truesdale and her husband Bob came from Tennessee for the church service. She said she remembers Jackson giving the prayer at the class’s high school graduation, 52 years ago.

“We knew then God had a mighty plan for him,” she said. “He leads by such a good example and I wanted to hear him preach.”

In addition to Gunnells, her mother, Annie Frazier, age 92, also came. Barbara Price, age 89 and Jackson’s English teacher at Brookland-Cayce, came too.

“When we had a poem recital, Charles would not only recite the poem, he would act it out,” Price said. “All of the other kids always wanted Charles to go first.” She also said Jackson was “a joy to teach.”

Lexington Two Schools Superintendent Dr. Nicholas Wade attended the service.
“I really enjoyed hearing Dr. Jackson preach,” Wade said. “It was a very enjoyable event.”
