SCDOT to implement new traffic pattern on Charleston Hwy (Hwy 321) bridge over Congaree Creek in (Cayce) Lexington County

The South Carolina Department of Transportation will implement a new traffic pattern on the U.S. Route 21 bridges over the Congaree Creek on Monday, November 2, near Cayce.

The southbound lanes of U.S. 21 will shift onto the newly built bridge while the two northbound lanes will remain in their current location.

The bridge construction is expected to be completed in late 2027.

SCDOT asks that drivers slow down and pay attention when driving near the work zone.

The newly built bridge was Phase 1. SCDOT is now entering Phase 2

During Phase 2 crews will build up the asphalt, demolish the old bridge, and shift traffic onto the new structure to make room for construction on the northbound side.

The new bridge is built with stronger materials and is 5 feet higher than its predecessor, designed to prevent overtopping during excessive rain events.
