The City of West Columbia continues to provide unique recreational opportunities for visitors and residents with the addition of the pedestrian bridge across the Saluda River. In partnership with the City of Columbia to address infrastructure needs through a joint jurisdictional approach, the long-awaited pedestrian bridge will soon become a staple in the region, strengthening the connection between the two communities while also promoting eco-tourism and outdoor recreation.
“The rivers that flow through our city are our crown jewels and most important assets. We have to get the pedestrian bridge project right, to make sure we maintain the health and beauty of our rivers while we expand access to them. We are working with stakeholders to incorporate input as we work on the design of this pedestrian bridge and access.”
A key feature of this project is site improvements to the bridge connection on the West Columbia side of the Saluda River. This includes paving a new driveway from Mohawk Drive to the bridge access point, constructing a new parking area, and building a boardwalk over the Saluda Mill Ruins. These investments are important to provide access not only to the pedestrian bridge but also to Phase Two of the project, which will add more walking trails and a restroom facility.
Project Highlights
- The bridge will span nearly 1,085 feet across the Saluda River, with boardwalks providing access to both sides of the river.
- Four scenic overlooks will offer unique viewpoints for enjoying the sights upstream and downstream.
- New walking trail with a boardwalk over the Saluda Mill Ruins.
