Social Work Is a Profession
An Editorial by Brenda Armstrong Clark, LMSW

March is Social Work Month — a time to celebrate the heart, strength, and dedication behind the profession. We are proud to be social workers. We are proud of the difference we make, the resilience we witness, and the compassion we bring into every space we enter.

Being a social worker means showing up for people during some of their hardest moments. It means advocating for justice, connecting individuals and families to vital resources, and believing in resilience even when the road feels heavy. Social work has earned its reputation as the helping profession and has made significant contributions to the strength and vitality of our nation’s individuals, families, groups, and communities.

Social workers help people find solutions and support those dealing with addiction, emotional distress, medical illness, poverty, discrimination, disasters, and other psychological, economic, and social challenges. We serve in child welfare agencies; veterans and military settings; services for older adults; inpatient and outpatient health and mental health facilities; schools; social service agencies; private practice; advocacy organizations; government agencies; legislatures; nonprofits; and many other settings across both the public and private sectors.

As social workers, we are making a meaningful impact in addressing the unique needs of families with school-aged children. Our services have become even more essential as economic inequality increases, the population ages, and many middle-class families struggle to maintain stability.

At the Brookland-Lakeview Empowerment Center (BLEC), social workers help families remain housed and ensure children stay enrolled in school. Additional services include food and clothing assistance, as well as housing and employment referrals. We collaborate with community-based funding partners who provide grants to implement community-appropriate solutions. Flexible, individualized support is tailored to best serve each family.

This holistic approach helps families maintain stable housing, increase income, and ensure their children remain stable in school — fostering long-term success and resilience.
