West Columbia Shines a Spotlight on Black-Owned Businesses Making an Impact
This month, West Columbia proudly celebrates the thriving Black-owned businesses that contribute to the city’s vibrancy and economic strength. While Black History Month originated in the United States to honor significant figures and milestones in African-American history, West Columbia shows ongoing support for its Black community and entrepreneurs year-round.
On February 3rd, the City of West Columbia officially designated February 12th as Black Business Day during the City Council meeting, highlighting the vital role of Black-owned businesses across industries, including automotive, food, hospitality, services, personal care, beauty, and retail. These businesses generate over $150 billion annually in the U.S. economy and include more than 2.5 million Black/African American–owned enterprises nationwide, representing about 10% of all U.S. businesses.
Within West Columbia, several Black-owned businesses exemplify excellence and community engagement:
Brickhouse Gourmet Coffee and Tea, located at 725 Meeting Street, opened in August 2024 at its newly renovated space after two years at its previous location. Known for its exceptional coffee, West Columbia’s warm, supportive atmosphere appeals to owner Akera, who chose to establish his business here rather than in Atlanta.
Chayz Lounge, opened by Chaye Alexander in June 2019 at 607 Meeting Street, attracts visitors from across the region for its high-quality entertainment. With sold-out shows and busloads of patrons from several states, Chaye highlights West Columbia’s strong cultural scene and welcoming spirit. She describes the community’s assistance during her remodel as instrumental and feels entirely at home.
Breeland Courier Service, at 1304 Sunset Boulevard, has served West Columbia for over 25 years. Owned by Dennis Breeland, this 24/7 small-package delivery service benefits from its proximity to Columbia Metropolitan Airport, enabling efficient pickup and delivery for flights. Dennis values his deep connection to the West Columbia community.
Brookland Baptist Church and Conference Center, located at 1066 Sunset Boulevard, stands as one of South Carolina’s largest congregations and an important community hub. Led by Rev. Dr. Charles B. Jackson, Sr., the church is celebrating its 55th anniversary and hosts various Black History Month events throughout the month, including a Black Business Expo scheduled for March 1.
Join us in celebrating West Columbia’s Black-owned businesses and the contributions made to our city’s cultural and economic landscape.
