1 A Repave

Augusta Road and Jarvis Klapman Boulevard repaved in West Columbia, what’s next?

Things are looking better on Augusta Road (US 1) in West Columbia and Jarvis Klapman Boulevard.
The repaving portion of the SCDOT’s US Highway 1 Corridor Improvement Project from Dreher Road to the I-26 on-ramp in West Columbia has been completed.

“I’m very excited to see this project coming to fruition,” said Mayor Tem Miles. “It looks great and it improves the traffic flow and makes it safer. And there’s more to come. It will increase pedestrian safety and streamline traffic flow.”

Miles the next phase of the road improvement plan will include: stamped crosswalks, including Dreher Road and Leaphart Road; Wade Street and the Westside Plaza Shopping Center, as well as at US-1 and the Wal-Mart entrance.

In addition to the repaving, the concrete medians have been installed. Miles said those medians will be landscaped by the West Columbia Beautification Foundation. The Augusta Road corridor is a highly visible part of West Columbia. The WCBF will plant vegetation in the medians. It is one of the  most-extensive undertakings of the Beautification Foundation.”

Jarvis Klapman Boulevard, too.

Jarvis Klapman Boulevard from Dreher Road to the Congaree River, in front of West Columbia City Hall, has also been repaved. “The visual to this point is enhanced,” Miles said.

Miles also said he is looking forward to the improvements package that begins at the State Street Intersection, along Meeting Street, all the way to 9th Street. The enhancements include: reducing a portion of Meeting Street from four lanes to two lanes;  on-street parking;  dedicated left turn lanes, planted medians, pedestrian crosswalks, and shared-use paths designed to accommodate both walkers and bikers.

“Interviews are now being conducted with Meeting Street Business Owners to get their feedback on how we can accommodate them as this Meeting Street Corridor Project proceeds,” Miles said. All projects are projected to be completed by the end of 2026. And they are just a couple of enhancements scheduled in 2026. Other parts of West Columbia will be getting attention, too. So stay tuned.
