The Columbia Police Department is investigating after a body was found on the east bank, or the Columbia side, of the Congaree River on Tuesday afternoon.

The body was found by kayakers on the river bank near Wheat Street around 6 p.m. The body is believed to be that of a white male. No more details regarding the have been give and it is not known how long the body has been at the location.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office has been called to the scene to assist in the investigation and help determine a cause of death.
