Update: Tractor-Trailer Bridge Hit on I-20 in Aiken County

Work continues on the I-20 closure in Aiken County. Overnight, contractors successfully demolished and removed the bridge structure damaged in a tanker crash and fire early Saturday morning. The structure was removed less than 24 hours after the crash occurred.

The damage was caused by the crash and fire involving a fuel truck early Saturday morning. Local fire officials said the overpass bridge collapsed as they were attempting to put out the fire. The interstate remains closed and traffic detoured.

With the roadway cleared, crews have begun milling and are now beginning work to repave the damaged sections of I-20 so that the interstate can be safely reopened.

Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes if possible. A detour route is in place and drivers that are traveling through the area should slow down, follow the signed detour route and stay alert for law enforcement and crews working on the roadway.

We will continue to share updates as crews work to clean up the site and more information becomes available.
