1 person is dead after bus carrying Pine Ridge Middle School students crashes on I-77

One person died in a crash involving a Lexington County School District Two bus on Interstate-77, Thursday, in Chester County. The identity of the person who died has nor been released. The accident occurred on I-77 southbound near the 55 mile marker 

The South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed one person died in the crash of a bus carrying students from Pine Ridge Middle School. Multiple people were injured, as many as 18, according to one report, many in critical condition.

Three buses from Pine Ridge Middle School were coming back from a field trip near Charlotte, when a tire blew out on one of the buses, causing an accident.

The bus then ran off the road to the right, struck a guardrail rail and overturned, according to the SCHP.

Units from the Chester County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash at around 1:47 p.m.. according to the CCSO. Several law enforcement and emergency agencies responded to the crash.

The bus was carrying three adults and about 35 students, according to a Lexington 2 press release. There were two other buses traveling back on Interstate 77 and they were not involved. Many involved in the crash sustained injuries.

State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver stated:

“Our hearts are broken by the tragic bus accident in Chester County this afternoon. Our entire state is mourning alongside the Pine Ridge Middle School families, friends, classmates, and educators. Please join me in praying for the Lexington Two community.”

Gov. Henry McMaster released a statement that said:

Today’s school bus accident in Chester County is a tragedy no family should ever have to endure. Peggy and I are heartbroken. Please join us in praying for the victim, their family, a speedy recovery for those injured, and the entire Lexington Two community. All of South Carolina is with you.
