C-WC Chamber members take inaugural tube trip to the new Cayce Take-Out on the Congaree River, from West Columbia

Board members from the Cayce-West Columbia Chamber of Commerce and Michael Mayo of Palmetto Outdoor took to the tubes, Monday. Some Chamber Board members rode Pedego Bikes from the put the West Columbia Riverwalk Put-In to the new Cayce Take-Out at Kelly Jones Park in the Riverland Park subdivision.

The occasion was the first tube tube trip from the West Columbia Riverwalk to Cayce’s new Take-Out point.

“We plan to offer a shorter tubing trip from West Columbia to Cayce next season,” said Mayo.

Because of slower currents and more shallow water, Mayo said tubers under the age of 10 would be able to take the tubing trips guided by Palmetto Outdoor, with the new Cayce Take-Out.

Chamber President Tim James praised Mayo for developing the eco-tourism business on the Congaree River.

“Michael Mayo’s vision has grown into the largest outdoor outfitting operations in the Southeast,” James said. “Tubers come from all over the country and that is good for all of our local merchants. The new Cayce take-out will just make an already vibrant enterprise even more successful.”

The new float path flows past the remains of the SS Columbia, under the Blossom Street Bridge and under the CSX train trestles and through the Cayce locks.
