The idea for the $36 million Sunset Split, project was initiated in 2015 with the idea of easing congestion on Sunset Boulevard (US 378) caused from heavy use of Corley Mill Road, Ginny Lane, Northside Boulevard and Riverchase Way. The Sunset Split would relocate Corley Mill Road, where River Bluff High School is, and Riverchase Way to alleviate the volume of vehicles that currently end up at the same intersections.
The project, it was announced in June, would be funded with $16 million in state funds that was allocated to build a conference center as a part of a 93-acre planned development of nearly 1,000 new homes on Lake Murray. That project was abandoned last year after residents voiced widespread opposition to it. The Town of Lexington also has $19.6 million from the local hospitality tax. (Town of Lexington images)
