SCDOT implementing nighttime lane closures at US 1 over I-20 interchange in Lexington County
The South Carolina Department of Transportation will begin temporary single and dual lane closures beginning May 14 on parts of I-20 as part of the US 1 over I-20 Interchange Improvement Project.
A tentative schedule of the closures can be found below.
Starting on May 14, I-20 East from east of Exit 55 (SC-6 North Lake Drive) to west of Exit 61 (US 378) will have single or dual lane closures installed during the following dates:
- 5/14/2024 Dual Inside Lanes 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/20/2024 Dual Outside Lanes 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/21/2024 Dual Outside Lanes 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/22/2024 Single Inside Lane 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/23/2024 Single Inside Lane 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/24/2024 Single Inside Lane 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/25/2024 Single Inside Lane 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM
- 5/27/2024 Single Inside Lane 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/31/2024 Dual Inside Lanes 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM
I-20 Eastbound Detours will occur on the following days:
- 5/15/2024 Full Detour 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/16/2024 Full Detour 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/17/2024 Full Detour 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM
- 5/18/2024 Full Detour 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM
Drivers using I-20 East will take the Exit 58 off ramp onto US 1, where they will turn left across US 1 to use the on ramp from US 1 to I-20 East. Traffic will be directed by law enforcement.
Drivers using US 1 North (toward West Columbia) who wish to access I-20 East will follow the detour route to Dooley Road, use the Dooley Road roundabout to turn around, and return to US 1 South toward Lexington. Drivers will follow the detour to the I-20 East on ramp from US 1 South.
Drivers using US 1 North toward West Columbia who wish to access West Columbia will not be impacted by the detour route and may continue on US 1 through the interchange.
Message board and signs along these routes will display detour directions.
SCDOT encourages the public to use caution and plan accordingly in case of delays.
The road work is part of the US 1 over I-20 Interchange Improvement Project in Lexington County and is a part of SCDOT’s Strategic 10-year Plan to rebuild South Carolina’s roads and bridges. Upon completion, the project will fully replace the existing interchange to improve overall traffic through this area. It is expected to be completed in the spring of 2024.
